NW Wood Box started in 2017, when brothers Steve and Brian Clearman were done with 'Corporate Life' and ready to do their own thing. Being natives of Washington, they wanted to find something they could do that was uniquely local. They both had a passion to work for themselves. They were both wine lovers and had followed the industry closely. They were intrigued as they saw the industry boom from 196 wineries in 2000 to nearly 1700 wineries in the Washington and Oregon areas. They thought a wine-related business might be a fit. They investigated several opportunities and found a woodworking company out of Springfield, OR, that was for sale. That business focused mainly on customized wood boxes for WA and OR wineries. They saw a lot of potential to make boxes that would work well in the wine trade. When they discovered that the region had no wooden wine box manufacturer (the nearest one was in Napa Valley), they knew there would be a niche they could fill locally.
In 2016, they bought the company and moved it to Camano Island, where their family had a cabin for decades. It wasn't long before they were growing, and by 2020, they were producing over 29,000 boxes per year. Offering handcrafted products in walnut, cherry, pine, oak, and maple, they now work with over 200 Washington wineries, gift companies, and corporate accounts. Their shop on Camano has doubled in size as they have grown, and they now employ 10 full-time people as they add experienced craft and tradespeople and continually strive to develop new items.
