ABOUT US

INSPIRED LOCALLY. MADE IN WASHINGTON. LOVED EVERYWHERE.

Historic made in washington

Made In Washington began with a simple idea—born on a road trip. While visiting a neighboring state, founders Gillian and Jack Mathews were inspired by a shop that celebrated local products. They wondered: why didn’t Washington have something similar?

That question led to the first Made In Washington store, opened in Pike Place Market’s Post Alley in 1984. What started with just 50 locally made items quickly grew into a thriving marketplace, now working with over 200 makers around the state.

Today, Made In Washington remains a showcase of local pride, craftsmanship, and community. Our customers, whether visiting us in-store or online, love the ability to support Washington artisans with thoughtfully curated items that reflect the creativity and spirit of our region. When you give a gift from Made In Washington, you share more than a product — you share a story.

Somewhat counter-intuitively, I love the weather in Washington. It’s never too extreme. I also appreciate the proximity to water and mountains.

We are surrounded by water and wildlife in Washington, and I find so much magic in kayaking with orcas and seals in the San Juan Islands. Kayaking with orcas is the most exciting experience I’ve ever had.

One of the things I love most about Washington is the weather: beautifully temperate long summer days, perfect spring and fall days, and just enough rain.
