After decades of working hand in hand with Mother Nature cross-pollinating, and testing and tasting by horticulturalist Bruce Barritt along with research and development by Washington State University’s world-class tree fruit breeding program, the Cosmic Crisp® apple was discovered. Classically bred and grown in Washington State, the Cosmic Crisp® is a cross of the 'Enterprise' and 'Honeycrisp' apple varieties. The large, juicy, and red apple has a perfectly balanced flavor and firm texture, making it ideal for snacking, cooking, baking, and entertaining.
Consumer focus groups helped name the new apple. The “Cosmic” factor of the name was developed because of the “striking” lenticels on the apple’s surface; they reminded the tasters of outer space and the cosmos. “Crisp” also links to its parent, ‘Honeycrisp’. One of the outstanding attributes of the apple is its crisp texture. Cosmic Crisp® was first planted commercially in 2017 with 12 million trees pre-ordered by Washington growers. Interest was so high in the trees that they had to initially be distributed by lottery. While the young trees grew, the state eagerly awaited their arrival. Then in 2019 we were thrilled to learn that our utterly new and delightful apple would finally be appearing in grocery stores everywhere. We’re excited to bring you these extraordinary apples because by special arrangement with WSU, and through 2029 you’ll only be able to get Cosmic Crisp® apples exclusively from Washington state orchards like Stemilt!
