A Stunning Exploration of 20 Lush Private Gardens

Seattle, Washington

Author Brian D. Coleman, MD, is a practicing psychiatrist in Seattle, Washington; he divides his time between Seattle and New York and his own garden is somewhat famous in the area.  An old-house enthusiast, he has transformed his home into a stunning vista and developed an active second career as an architectural writer. Brian is the author of 21 books on the decorative arts, including the recent titles Zuber, Farrow & Ball, Fortuny, and D. Porthault. He has written numerous articles on architecture, interior design, and historic home design for magazines and is an editor-at-large for Old-House Interiors.

His latest book, Private Gardens of the Pacific Northwest, began around 2019 when his publisher Gibbs Smith Books asked him to do a regional garden book.  He had written another garden book Intimate Gardens a few years earlier and is an avid gardener himself (his colorful Seattle garden is the last one in the book) so it didn't take much for him to say yes!  He began contacting gardeners in Washington and Oregon and as the word spread he got wonderful referrals.  By including a wide range of gardens - city and country, small and large, colorful and wooded he hopes to give inspiration to everyone and every type of garden.
